The Switzkill Farm Trail begins at a small parking area off Game Farm Road in the town of Berne, winding through a mix of open meadows, second-growth forest, and stream corridors on town-managed land. Several interconnected trail segments and spurs create options to shorten or lengthen the route, but the most common loop circles the upper property and passes a pond, open field, and forested ridgeline. About halfway around the loop, a short climb leads to a broad open field with a scenic view toward the Catskills — especially rewarding on clear days.
Trail markings vary in clarity, and some paths may be faint or overgrown, so using a GPS app or map is recommended. Seasonal conditions can affect access — in winter, the steep gravel road may require four-wheel drive. Wildlife is common, and while firearms are officially prohibited, hikers should remain aware during hunting season. The route’s gentle grades and varied terrain make it a great choice for relaxed day hikes in the Capital Region, with just enough elevation to feel rewarding without being strenuous.
