Loop
The Kenrose Sanctuary route begins from a small pull-off along the Bridge Road in Berne, New York, within The Nature Conservancy’s Kenrose Preserve. The trail forms a forested loop that travels through second-growth woodland on what was once farmland, showcasing the region’s natural rewilding. From the trailhead, follow the singletrack as it heads gently uphill through mixed hardwoods. Shortly after the start, the route crosses a narrow stream that may run high or muddy after rain. Continue uphill, keeping right at any informal junctions to stay on the main loop.
Higher up, the trail reaches its most elevated point, offering filtered views across Bradt Hollow and the surrounding hills. In spring, this section is especially colorful with wildflowers like red trillium, trout lily, and wild geranium dotting the forest floor. The route descends gradually back to the lower section, reconnecting near the initial stream crossing before returning to the trailhead. Expect soft or muddy ground in wet seasons, and be prepared for seasonal hunting activity — hikers should stay on trail and observe posted rules.
This short but rewarding route offers a quiet walk through transitional forest, ideal for day hikes near Albany in any season.
