Loop
The Keleher Preserve Outer Loop begins at the trailhead on Gulf Hill Road in Berne and follows the White Trail clockwise through mature hardwood forest. The route starts with a gradual climb along an old woods road before reaching a marked Y-intersection—stay LEFT to continue on the White Trail. After a short distance, a signed junction leads left onto the Red Trail spur, which climbs gently to an open overlook with views of the Helderberg Escarpment and the Hudson Valley. Return to the main trail and turn left to continue the loop. The route stays mostly level as it traverses a forested ridgeline with occasional rocky outcrops and glacial erratics. At the next intersection, stay left to remain on the White Trail and descend gradually back toward the trailhead.
This is one of the best day hikes near Albany for those seeking a quiet loop with classic Northeast forest scenery and rewarding views without major elevation gain.
