Beginning at the Upper Copeland Hill Road parking area, this moderate route follows a combination of color-marked trails forming a scenic perimeter around the Winifred Matthews Holt Preserve. From the trailhead, the path passes a small pond before climbing gradually through mixed hardwood forest toward the higher slopes of Copeland Hill. At early junctions, stay on the outer trail system—typically following the Green, Yellow, and Red Trails—to maintain the loop. The route winds through shaded woods, crosses intermittent streambeds, and climbs short, steep sections that reveal partial views across the Helderberg foothills.
Several signed connectors branch inward toward the preserve’s center, allowing hikers to shorten or extend their outing. Seasonal wet areas and seeps appear near the mid-route descent, where footing can be soft after rain. The final stretch descends gently back toward the upper lot. Hikers should wear blaze orange in fall when hunting may occur, and plan to use the lower Copeland Hill Road lot during winter months. Quiet forest scenery, varied terrain, and glimpses of surrounding ridges make this one of the more rewarding short hikes near New Scotland.
