Loop
Starting from a small pullout along Treadlemire Hill Road, this moderate route travels through the northern section of Dutch Settlement State Forest, avoiding the Cannady Hill spur and sticking to a quieter, less-traveled network of trails. The path winds through a mix of hardwood and conifer stands, passing mossy creekbeds and the remnants of old stone walls from long-abandoned farms. Early on, stay left at the first junction to begin the loop in a clockwise direction. Trails can be narrow and sometimes faint—watch for flagging or tree blazes, especially at junctions farther in.
After a few gradual climbs and short, steep pitches, the route crests several low ridgelines with filtered views through the trees, particularly before turning back south. Seasonal streams appear in several drainages, but water can be unreliable late in the summer. In fall, expect hunting activity—bright clothing is advised. Return to the trailhead by closing the loop from the east side. This is a peaceful, less-developed route for hikers seeking solitude, wildlife sightings, and a sense of backcountry immersion in Central New York.
