The Schodack Island State Park Loop begins at the main trailhead near the park entrance on Schodack Island Road and follows a series of flat, well-marked paths through a mix of riparian forest, tidal marsh, and open riverbank. From the trailhead, follow signs toward the River Trail and continue south through shaded woods. At the first major Y-intersection, stay right to follow the outer loop along the Hudson River. The route winds past several quiet viewing spots where hikers can pause to look for bald eagles, herons, and waterfowl frequenting the marshes.
As the trail curves eastward, it passes through more open terrain with tall grasses and occasional glimpses of the water. Continue north at the next major junction to stay on the loop, eventually reentering denser forest as you near the return leg. Trails are generally wide and easy to follow, though sections may be muddy or flooded after heavy rain or in spring. Ticks are common in warmer months, so precautions are recommended. The loop ends back at the main trailhead, offering an easy and scenic outing ideal for birdwatching or a mellow walk by the river.
