Starting from the pullout off NY-13 south of Ithaca, this route ascends into the Lick Brook gorge via a spur that quickly connects to the Finger Lakes Trail. The trail climbs steeply iup the ravine, with uneven footing and exposed roots requiring steady footing—especially in wet conditions. At the first junction, stay on the main trail to follow the creek upstream toward Lower Falls, the tallest in the series. A short distance beyond, Middle and Upper Falls appear in succession, each framed by sheer, moss-covered cliffs and shaded forest.
The route continues to follow the creek through the Sweedler and Thayer Preserves, managed by The Nature Conservancy, before gradually climbing back out of the gorge. While the main route returns the way it came, experienced hikers can extend the day by connecting with additional paths in the Finger Lakes Trail network. Water levels vary seasonally, but fall offers the most reliable flow and vibrant foliage. Despite its proximity to town, this is one of the more rugged and rewarding day hikes near Ithaca.
