This route begins at the main entrance near the Buttermilk Falls parking area and follows a counterclockwise direction for the best visual approach to the falls. Start by ascending the Gorge Trail, which climbs beside Buttermilk Creek and passes a dramatic series of waterfalls, including the namesake 165-foot Buttermilk Falls. Stone staircases wind through a narrow canyon carved into layered shale and sandstone, offering close-up views of plunging cascades and sheer rock walls. This section is often wet and can be slippery—watch your footing, especially on the steeper climbs and near drop-offs.
At the top of the gorge, turn left to connect with the Rim Trail. This quieter segment loops through a deciduous forest canopy with filtered views into the gorge and chances to spot wildlife like white-tailed deer or songbirds. Continue on the Rim Trail as it gradually descends back to the parking area, completing the loop. Gorge Trail access is typically restricted in winter and early spring due to icy conditions, so check seasonal closures before planning your hike. This route is a popular day hike in the Finger Lakes region for those looking to explore classic gorge terrain, layered rock formations, and one of Ithaca’s most photogenic waterfalls.
