This moderate route begins and ends at the Upper Entrance of Buttermilk Falls State Park, just west of Ithaca, New York. From the trailhead, head downhill on the Gorge Trail, descending steep stone stairs alongside Buttermilk Creek. This section includes multiple waterfalls, including the park’s namesake cascade. After a short distance, turn left at the first signed junction to follow the Bear Trail uphill, climbing through shaded hardwood forest along a series of smaller cascades. Continue past the intersection with the Treman Lake Trail to reach the southern shore of Lake Treman.
From here, turn right to circle the lake counterclockwise, walking along the narrow shoreline path before connecting to the Rim Trail on the far side. Turn right again onto the Rim Trail, which decends gently through mixed forest with occasional views into the gorge below. The route eventually leads back to the Upper Entrance. This hike includes multiple stair sections and uneven surfaces that require sure footing.
Best completed in late spring through fall, this scenic route offers classic Finger Lakes hiking with waterfalls, lake views, and high wildlife activity.
