The Susan Bacher Memorial Trail begins near the Helen W. Buckner Memorial Preserve at Bald Mountain and follows a steady, moderately wooded path toward a scenic overlook above the Lake Champlain wetlands. This route is managed by The Nature Conservancy and Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department and is reserved for hiking only—dogs, camping, fires, and motorized use are not permitted. The trail climbs gradually through old-growth hardwood forest, with seasonal wildflower displays in spring and summer. Occasional small streams appear in lower sections, but reliable water sources are lacking, so plan accordingly.
Expect potential mud and slippery footing after rain, particularly in spring. The trail is open May through November, though it may close temporarily during mud season or after heavy snowfalls. This area is known for birdwatching, especially near the wetland edge, so bring binoculars for a chance to spot migratory species. The overlook at the end of the route offers a peaceful view of the surrounding valley, making it a rewarding destination for a short, nature-filled outing.
