The Coldbrook Preserve Loop Trail begins at a small parking area on Homestead Road, just off Route 29 in Northumberland. From the trailhead, follow the well-marked Blue Trail as it heads into a quiet second-growth forest. The route gently winds through transitional woodland, crosses several wetland areas on narrow boardwalks, and skirts the banks of Cole Brook. At a Y-intersection shortly after entering the woods, stay left to follow the loop clockwise. The trail continues over modest terrain with occasional muddy sections, especially during spring and after rain.
As the route bends through shaded lowlands and upland woods, hikers pass through habitat that supports threatened species like the Blanding’s turtle and attracts a wide variety of songbirds and woodland wildlife. The loop is narrow in sections and runs close to private property—be sure to stay on the marked path. After completing the loop, rejoin the entry trail and return to the trailhead the way you came. This short, accessible route offers a peaceful walk in nature and a glimpse into a thriving wetland ecosystem.
