Loop
The Graphite Range Community Forest Loop begins at a designated trailhead off US Route 9 in Wilton, just north of Saratoga Springs. From the parking area, follow the main trail counterclockwise into a mixed hardwood forest typical of the southern Adirondack foothills. The route gradually climbs to a wooded ridgeline, weaving through a series of junctions that form a well-marked, interconnected trail network. At each fork, follow signs for the main loop to stay on track. Within the first segment, look for remnants of the area’s graphite mining history—visible foundations, mine openings, and stonework are scattered just off the trail. These features are signed and fenced; stay on the path and avoid approaching open shafts.
As the route continues, it descends through hemlock groves and crosses several small streams that may run high in spring. Moderate climbs and rolling terrain offer steady but manageable elevation changes, making this a solid choice for trail running, day hiking, or winter snowshoeing. Expect some muddy conditions in shoulder seasons and occasional shared use with mountain bikers. Views along the ridgeline and forested solitude make this one of the best day hikes near Saratoga Springs.
