The Neilmann Trail begins from a small trailhead on Ruggles Road, just east of King Road in the Town of Wilton. This easy route forms two short, connected loops—Forest Loop and Swamp Loop—through the Neilmann Parcel of the Wilton Wildlife Preserve & Park. From the trailhead, head west into the woods and follow the well-marked path as it winds gently through mixed forest. At the first Y-intersection, stay left to complete the Forest Loop, or veer right to access the Swamp Loop, which skirts the edge of Miller Swamp—the largest wetland in Wilton. Wooden boardwalks help hikers cross wetter stretches, but expect mud or standing water in spring and after rain.
This route is especially popular in spring when vernal pools fill and amphibian activity is at its peak. Dogs are welcome on leash, and the flat terrain makes for a relaxed walk suited to most skill levels. There are no water sources, so carry your own and be prepared for mosquitoes in warmer months. Ideal for a peaceful nature walk or family outing, the Neilmann Trail offers a close-up look at a thriving wetland ecosystem.
