The Whetstone Gulf Rim and Gorge Trail begins near the main picnic area in Whetstone Gulf State Park and forms a full circuit around and through a dramatic sandstone canyon. From the trailhead, the route follows the gorge rim in either direction—most hikers start counter-clockwise by heading west along the northern rim. The narrow path winds through mixed hardwood forest and stays close to the edge, offering frequent viewpoints into the 350-foot-deep gorge below. Steep drop-offs, uneven tread, and occasional slick rock require careful footing, especially after rain.
Roughly halfway through the route, the trail descends into the gorge and crosses Whetstone Creek, where hikers will encounter shaded rock walls, lush understory, and seasonal stream access. Water is untreated—filter if needed. After following the gorge floor, the route climbs back up to complete the loop along the opposite rim. Spring wildflowers and colorful fall foliage add seasonal interest, and black bear activity is possible—carry appropriate gear and follow bear-aware practices. This route rewards hikers with dramatic terrain and elevated views that make it a standout among day hikes in northern New York.
