There and Back
This route to Moose River Mountain begins at a trailhead north of Thendara, NY, following the Big Otter Lake Trail west through a mix of hardwood and conifer forest. After a short distance, the trail crosses a few small streams and wetland edges—expect muddy stretches, particularly in low-lying areas. Continue to a Y-intersection and stay left onto the Big Otter East Trail, which swings southwest through increasingly remote terrain with several beaver pond crossings. At the next junction, turn left onto the Moose River Mountain Trail. This final stretch climbs steadily up the ridgeline, with a few rocky, overgrown segments and light bushwhacking near the summit.
The top of Moose River Mountain offers partial views through the trees and a peaceful spot to rest before retracing your steps. This hike showcases a quieter side of the Adirondacks, with classic backcountry character and the potential for wildlife sightings along the way.
