The Nicks Lake Loop Trail begins at the Nicks Lake Day Use parking area near Old Forge and circles the shoreline through a mix of hardwood forest and wetland terrain. Hikers can travel clockwise or counterclockwise, following a well-marked path that alternates between packed dirt, roots, and short sections of boardwalk. Early in the route, the trail passes several spur paths leading to picnic areas and lake access points before settling into a quieter stretch through shaded forest.
Around the western side of the lake, hikers encounter the most scenic portion of the route, with frequent openings for lake views and benches for rest or birdwatching. Small stream crossings and occasional muddy spots appear after rain, especially in spring. The trail then curves back toward the eastern shore, reconnecting with the main access road and returning to the Day Use area. This easy-to-moderate route offers a peaceful half-day outing in the Black River Wild Forest, ideal for families, casual hikers, or anyone seeking a relaxed Adirondack lake walk.
