Begin this route at a trailhead within Sugar Hill Town Forest, a locally managed network of forested singletrack trails in northern New Hampshire. From the trailhead, follow signs for the Bear Claw Trail, a moderately graded path that winds through a mix of hardwood and conifer forest. At several points along the way, the route crosses trail junctions—stay alert for signage and maintain a general easterly heading. After a steady climb and rolling terrain, Bear Claw transitions to connector trails that lead toward the Garnet Hill area.
As the route nears Garnet Hill, expect steeper pitches and narrower paths. The final stretch follows either the Garnet Hill Trail or a spur connection through the woods, depending on current signage and trail conditions. From the summit area, partial views through the trees offer a quiet payoff and a sense of seclusion. Return along the same route through the forest network. This is a rewarding option for hikers looking for moderate day hikes in the White Mountains foothills with minimal crowds and a mix of trail types.
