This moderate hiking route begins at the Powells Valley Trailhead on Lykens Road, on land managed by the town of Lykens, adjacent to the Haldeman Tract of Weiser State Forest. From the trailhead, follow Lykens Road west a short way, then turn right onto the Doc Smith Trail. This wooded path winds through quiet forest with mixed hardwoods and fern-covered understory, passing occasional rock outcrops and narrow, brushy sections. After looping back to Lykens Road, turn left for a short stretch, then right onto the Hop Back Trail, which leads back to the trailhead through similar terrain.
For a longer option, cross Powells Valley Road from the trailhead and continue onto the Stone Cabin Trail. Turn left onto Rugged Trail to return to the starting point. This hybrid route follows a mix of narrow footpaths and old forest tracks, with minimal signage—carry a map or use GPS navigation. While there are no reliable water sources on the trail, nearby Rattling Creek can be accessed via connecting routes. The area sees low foot traffic and is open year-round, offering a quiet hiking experience with subtle elevation changes, potential wildlife sightings, and a remote feel.
