Loop
The Dehart Dam Loop begins just east of Dehart Reservoir at a small trailhead on Clarks Valley Road, in State Game Lands 211. From the trailhead, head into the woods, cross the footbridge, and take the first right to begin a southerly climb through dense forest. At the next junction, turn left onto the Appalachian Trail and follow it along a rocky ridgeline with steady elevation gain. Continue on the Appalachian Trail until reaching the signed junction with Sand Springs Trail, then turn left again to begin the return leg.
The route crosses over the crest of Stony Mountain before descending through mixed hardwoods and making one final left turn to finish back at the trailhead. Along the way, hikers encounter diverse terrain, including loose rock, steep grades, and occasional creek crossings that may require wet footing. Reservoir views near Dehart Dam highlight the area’s natural features, and the connection to the Appalachian Trail adds long-distance trail interest. This route travels through active hunting lands—wear blaze orange during firearm seasons. It’s a strenuous hike well-suited for those seeking challenging day hikes in central Pennsylvania.
