The route begins at the Moose Lake Road Trailhead, reached via Forest Road 5106 off MT-38. From the trailhead, follow the well-defined path as it climbs steadily through conifer forest, transitioning into rocky switchbacks. After a sustained uphill stretch, reach a junction near the crest—take the option to travel east on the Hi Line Trail to descend toward Phyllis Lake, nestled in a granite cirque with open views and primitive campsites. Continue over a minor saddle, then descend to Johnson Lake, a larger body of water framed by steep alpine walls and frequent wildlife sightings.
From Johnson Lake, follow the main trail down through subalpine meadows and intermittent creek crossings. The trail can be faint in places—navigation awareness is essential. As the route returns to the trailhead, expect a long, forested descent with occasional clearings and distant views of the Anaconda Range. Wildflowers are abundant in midsummer, while late September brings golden larch and quieter trails. This route offers a rugged, high-country experience in the heart of the Anaconda-Pintler Wilderness.
