There and Back
The route to Hidden Lake begins at the East Fork Bitterroot Trailhead and follows the East Fork Bitterroot Trail westward through dense forest alongside the river. After a long, gradual approach along the valley floor, the trail crosses several side creeks and passes through open meadows that bloom with wildflowers in midsummer. Around halfway in, the terrain becomes steeper and rockier as the trail gains elevation toward the alpine. At a signed junction, take the Hidden Lake spur trail. From here, the route climbs steadily through subalpine forest and rugged terrain, eventually reaching the lake tucked beneath high cirque walls.
Hidden Lake offers panoramic views of the surrounding Pintler Range and a high likelihood of spotting mountain goats on nearby slopes. This is bear country—travel in groups when possible and follow food storage regulations if camping overnight.
