This moderate to challenging route begins and ends at the Carpp Creek Trailhead in the Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest. From the trailhead, follow the Carpp Creek Trail on a steady climb through lodgepole forest, reaching Lower and then Upper Carpp Lake, both nestled in high alpine basins with ample water access and good options for dispersed camping. From Upper Carpp Lake, continue climbing to Warren Pass, where expansive views open up before the trail drops into the southern end of Maloney Basin along the Hi-Line Trail.
Descending into the basin, the trail winds through open granite benches and broad subalpine meadows before turning north onto the Maloney Creek Trail. This final stretch leads through mixed forest and riparian drainages, eventually reconnecting with the Carpp Creek Trail near the trailhead. Expect rocky climbs, lingering snow into early summer, and creek crossings that may be swift during runoff. This rewarding route offers reliable alpine water sources, wildflower displays, and the chance to spot moose, mountain goats, and other wildlife along the way.
