There and Back
The Tamarack Lake Trail begins at the Carpp Creek Trailhead in the Anaconda-Pintler Wilderness and climbs through dense forest along the creek before gaining elevation into open, rocky terrain. From the trailhead, follow the main path westward, keeping right at the early Y-intersection to stay on the trail toward Tamarack Lake. The route gradually climbs through subalpine forest with occasional stream crossings, then transitions to meadows filled with wildflowers by midsummer. Around the halfway point, the trail begins a steeper ascent through talus-strewn slopes as it approaches the high basin.
This is an out-and-back trail, and the return follows the same route to the trailhead. Near the lake, hikers may encounter light scrambling over granite slabs as the trail skirts above the treeline. Tamarack Lake lies in a secluded glacial cirque surrounded by dramatic cliffs, with views of Warren Peak rising to the southwest. This area is known for mountain goat sightings and offers reliable water and excellent backcountry camping. Seasonal snow lingers well into summer, and the trail is typically best from mid-July through early October. Bear spray is strongly recommended, and proper food storage is required throughout the wilderness. This is a scenic, moderately strenuous route into classic Montana high country.
