Loop
The French's Ledges Outer Loop begins at the Plainfield Elementary School parking lot and winds through a network of wooded trails just outside the small village of Plainfield, NH. From the trailhead, follow the marked path into mixed hardwood forest, where the trail climbs gradually before reaching a junction. Bear left at the Y-intersection to follow the outer loop in a clockwise direction. A short distance later, optional spurs branch off and reconnect, offering opportunities to shorten or extend the route depending on time and conditions.
The trail steepens as it approaches the ledges—open rock outcrops that offer broad views across the Upper Valley. This section includes a few moderate scrambles but remains manageable for most hikers. After enjoying the overlook, continue along the outer loop as it descends gently through forested terrain, passing occasional open meadow edges and habitat for spring wildflowers and songbirds. Stay on marked paths, as parts of the route cross private property. This is a great half-day route for year-round hiking near the Upper Valley, with excellent foliage in fall and bird activity in spring.
