There and Back
This route begins and ends at the Beaver Meadow Trailhead, climbing steadily through mixed hardwood forest before transitioning into higher-elevation spruce-fir terrain. Follow the Beaver Meadow Trail to the pond, passing several seasonal stream crossings that may require care, especially during spring runoff. At a signed junction, begin climbing up Whiteface Trail. The grade steepens as the trail narrows and becomes more rugged, with slippery roots and boulders common underfoot.
After a sustained climb through thick forest, the route connects with Long Trail to reach the summit of Whiteface Mountain via a short, rocky spur. The treed summit offers filtered views at first, but a short scramble leads to an open outcrop with panoramic views across the Green Mountains. Watch for moose tracks, birdsong, and signs of black bear activity in this quiet zone. Return by retracing your steps along the Long Trail, then descending via Whiteface to Beaver Meadow Trail and the trailhead. This is a rewarding alpine hike for experienced hikers comfortable with rugged terrain and remote navigation.
