Loop
The Upper Gorge Loop begins off Sterling Valley Road west of Morristown, Vermont. This moderate route forms a full circuit through mixed hardwood forest, following well-defined but often uneven paths with short steep sections and rocky terrain. From the trailhead, the route heads west, gradually climbing through dense woods. Several seasonal streams cross the trail—expect muddy conditions in spring and slippery rocks near water crossings.
The trail winds through a quiet, remote setting where moose and deer are occasionally seen. While vistas are limited, a few clearings offer partial views of the surrounding hills and a glimpse into the gorge below. Continue along the loop, passing through shaded glades and areas of open understory before returning to the original junction. Backcountry camping is allowed with adherence to Leave No Trace guidelines, but fires are restricted outside designated areas. This is black bear habitat—carry appropriate food storage and be prepared for minimal services. The loop is best hiked from late May through October, when the trail is clear of snow and water levels are manageable.
