This challenging route to the Chin of Mt. Mansfield begins near the Barnes Camp Visitor Center near Smugglers Notch. From the parking area, follow a short boardwalk to reach the Long Trail, which climbs steadily through dense northern hardwood forest. At a junction near Taft Lodge, hikers can stay on the Long Trail or veer left onto Profanity Trail, a steeper and more direct ascent to the summit ridgeline. Profanity Trail is less traveled and considerably steeper, with sections of scrambling and loose rock. Both trails reconnect near the summit approach, where the route becomes exposed and rocky, requiring careful footing and the use of hands in places.
Above treeline, hikers should stay on marked rock paths to protect the fragile alpine tundra. The Chin offers panoramic views across the Green Mountains, Lake Champlain, and the Adirondacks beyond. This is one of the best alpine hikes in Vermont, but conditions can be harsh—especially in wet weather. Descend by retracing your route and use caution on the steep, slick rock.
