This route starts and ends at the Hell Brook Trailhead on Highway 108, after climbing the steepest, most technical path up Mount Mansfield and returning via the Profanity Trail and the Long Trail.
Begin climbing along the stream, ascending 2,867 vertical feet to the summit. At 0.7 miles, keep right at the junction with the Hell Brook Cutoff Trail. Scramble up steep, wet rock slabs using the installed iron rungs. At 1.0 mile, turn left to summit Adam's Apple. Continue along the trail, keeping straight through the intersection with Hell Brook Trail.
Follow Long Trail south, scrambling to the summit of Mount Mansfield after 1.4 miles, at 4,396 feet.
To return, descend south on the Long Trail. At 1.5 miles, turn left onto the blue-blazed Profanity Trail, descending to the Taft Lodge junction at 1.9 miles. Turn right onto the Long Trail, descending to Highway 108 at 3.7 miles. Turn left on the highway, walking north back to the trailhead.
