There and Back
The Hazelton Trail begins near the base of the Mount Mansfield Toll Road and climbs steadily through hardwood forest toward the upper elevations of Mount Mansfield. The route maintains a consistent uphill grade as it winds through dense woods, occasionally crossing seasonal streams that may dry up in late summer. Around halfway up, hikers encounter more rugged and rocky footing, with brief scrambles on steep sections as the trail gains elevation toward the ridgeline.
At a junction with the Long Trail near the summit ridge, hikers can turn south to the Forehead or north to the Nose, two of Mount Mansfield’s distinctive high points. This upper portion features exposed terrain, with panoramic views on clear days and frequent wildlife sightings, including moose and grouse. The trail’s higher elevations can be slick when wet and may be restricted during certain seasons to protect fragile alpine vegetation. For hikers looking for a moderate but sustained ascent in Mount Mansfield State Forest, the Hazelton Trail offers a rewarding climb to a scenic alpine destination.
