Description
This route begins at the Sterling Pond Trailhead near the top of Smugglers’ Notch and climbs briefly to Sterling Pond, a scenic high-elevation lake known for trout fishing and moose sightings. From the pond’s outlet, the Long Trail heads west through dense forest and steep, rocky terrain, gaining elevation quickly. Be prepared for short scrambles and slick roots, especially in wet conditions. The route passes through alpine zones with low-growing flora and occasional views toward Mount Mansfield before ascending a narrow ridge toward Madonna Peak. Continue along the ridgeline trail to reach open ledges near the summit, where sweeping views stretch across the Green Mountains. This rugged out-and-back route rewards experienced hikers with challenging footing and rewarding high-country scenery.
