Loop
From the Hell Brook Trailhead on VT-108 in Smugglers’ Notch, this strenuous loop climbs steeply through dense forest and mossy glades along the Hell Brook Trail. The route ascends the eastern flank of Mount Mansfield on a rugged, Class 2–3 scramble, weaving through boulders, tree roots, and exposed rock ledges. After a sustained and demanding climb, reach the open ridge near Adams Apple, a rocky prominence just below The Chin, Mansfield’s true summit. Hikers may continue briefly to The Chin before returning to the loop.
The descent follows the Hell Brook Cutoff Trail, which reconnects with the Hell Brook Trail lower on the slope. This section is steep and can be slick in wet conditions. The entire route passes through classic Green Mountains terrain, with high-elevation boreal forest, granite outcrops, and potential moose sign along the way. Seasonal water sources may flow in the lower forested sections, but are unreliable by late summer.
This challenging route rewards experienced hikers with a true alpine feel, fewer crowds, and panoramic views from one of Vermont’s highest ridgelines.
