Description
The Split Rock Trail begins off Sterling Valley Road and climbs through a mature hardwood canopy toward its namesake geologic feature. From the trailhead, follow a well-marked path that gradually gains elevation before steepening across rocky terrain. Continue uphill as the trail winds through a dense understory of ferns and occasional wet spots from seasonal runoff. The route leads to a prominent glacial erratic—Split Rock—perched in a small clearing near the high point of the trail. This massive boulder, cracked nearly in half, is a striking reminder of the area’s glacial past. Wildlife sightings are common in this quiet forest zone, with deer, moose, and various songbirds often spotted along the way. The return follows the same path. This moderate hike offers a peaceful, shaded retreat with a geologic landmark as its reward.
