There and Back
This easy route begins near the town of Johnson, Vermont, with access from the Rail Trail parking area off Railroad Street. Follow the Lamoille Valley Rail Trail westward along a mostly flat, gravel path that parallels the Lamoille River. The route offers a gentle walk suitable for most hikers, with leashed dogs welcome. Along the way, watch for wildlife such as herons or beavers in the wetlands and riverbanks nearby.
Stay on the rail trail until reaching the signed spur that leads to Dog Head Falls. The falls, tucked along a bend in the river, feature a series of short cascades and offer a peaceful spot to rest. Use caution near the water, especially during spring runoff, when river currents can be swift. The trail returns the way it came. This route is especially rewarding in fall when the surrounding hardwood forest turns vibrant with color.
