There and Back
Starting at the Codding Hollow Trailhead near Waterville, this route follows the Long Trail north toward Laraway Mountain. The trail begins with a steady ascent through mixed hardwood and conifer forest, where small streams and Codding Hollow Brook provide early water sources. After the initial climb, the trail crosses gentle terrain before steepening significantly as it nears the summit. About halfway to the summit, hikers encounter increasingly rocky footing and short scrambles, especially near natural overhangs and ice-formed cliffs that line the upper slopes in cooler months.
Near the top, a spur path leads to dramatic cliffside viewpoints offering sweeping views across the northern Green Mountains. Moose and black bear are common in this remote section of the Long Trail, so proper food storage and awareness are important. Return the way you came, watching for wet ledges and slick rock, especially after recent rain. Despite the rugged upper stretch, the route’s solitude and summit views make it a rewarding day hike in the northern Green Mountains.
