There and Back
The Deep Ravine Trail begins near Last Stand Hill and the Custer National Cemetery within Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument in southeastern Montana. This easy, paved walking route heads east from the main monument area, following a short ridge before dropping slightly toward the Deep Ravine, a significant site from the 1876 Battle of the Little Bighorn. The trail is clearly marked and includes interpretive signs explaining key events and troop movements.
Although short in length, the trail offers a sobering perspective on the terrain where the battle took place. Visitors pass several battlefield markers and learn about the final movements of U.S. soldiers during the conflict. While the prairie setting appears open and quiet today, the interpretive content adds a compelling historical layer to the experience.
