There and Back
This route begins at the Four Dances Natural Area trailhead off Coburn Road, just southeast of Billings, Montana. From the parking area, follow a well-marked path heading east through open prairie and sandstone bluffs. The trail stays mostly flat and straightforward, offering expansive views almost immediately. About halfway in, veer right at a clear junction to continue toward the rim of the Yellowstone River canyon. From here, the path skirts the edge of the bluff, with wide views and frequent opportunities to spot raptors soaring on thermals below.
At the end of the trail, look for the remains of the Will James Cabin—a simple structure marking the former home of the cowboy author and illustrator. The site is unmarked but visible along the bluff's edge. Return the way you came, retracing your route back through prairie grasslands where mule deer and songbirds are often seen. This is a low-effort route with high scenic reward, best suited for spring or fall day hikes near Billings.
