Loop
This route follows the outermost loop at Zimmerman Park, a city-managed open space on the western edge of Billings. The trail begins from the main parking area off Zimmerman Trail Road and quickly climbs onto the rim. From here, hikers can follow a clear path that wraps around the park’s perimeter, staying close to the cliff edges in places and dipping through shallow drainages in others.
The outer loop forms a broad circuit around the sandstone bluff, offering near-constant views over Billings and the Yellowstone River valley. The terrain is generally flat with some short rocky sections, patches of slickrock, and sandy tread. While this route outlines the park’s edge, several connector trails cut across the interior, making shorter loops or alternate paths easy to access.
This is a popular trail system for walkers, runners, and casual hikers looking for a scenic but easy outing near town. The full outer loop provides a longer walk with open views and a sense of space above the city.
