Loop
Starting at the visitor center in Pictograph Cave State Park southeast of Billings, this short, well-marked route forms a loop around three sandstone caves—Pictograph, Middle, and Ghost. The trail climbs gently from the trailhead, quickly reaching the namesake cave, where interpretive signs describe pictographs left by Indigenous peoples more than 2,000 years ago. Continue clockwise as the trail curves along a low ridgeline above the valley. At a Y-intersection near the second cave, keep right to complete the loop.
The path is wide and mostly level, making it suitable for all skill levels, though footing can be slick after rain or snow. There are no water sources along the route, but drinking water and restrooms are available at the visitor center. With minimal shade, the trail can be hot during summer afternoons. Broad views across the Yellowstone River valley and the opportunity to view rare archaeological features make this an engaging and educational day hike near Billings.
