There and Back
This route begins and ends at the Logan Brook Trailhead after reaching the summit of Whitecap Mountain.
From the access point on Logan Brook Road, follow the Appalachian Trail as it heads southeast, climbing moderately through a mixed hardwood forest while keeping Logan Brook on your right. The trail crosses several small feeder streams and grows steeper as the forest transitions to spruce and fir.
At 1.5 miles, reach the Logan Brook Lean-to on the right. Continue along the Appalachian Trail. Climb over steep, rocky terrain and exposed roots to reach the open, ledgered summit of Whitecap Mountain at 2.8 miles. The 3,644-foot summit features unobstructed views of Mount Katahdin and the surrounding Hundred-Mile Wilderness.
Retrace your steps to return to the trailhead.
