Description
This route starts and ends at Kidney Pond Campground. From the trailhead area, follow the Doubletop Mountain Trail north from the campground, passing the Draper Pond Trail junction at 0.3 mile and crossing Slaughter Brook at 0.9 mile. At 1.1 miles, pass the south shore of Deer Pond, then bear left onto an old tote road at 1.3 miles, where a spur trail leads right to a parking area on Kidney Pond Road. At 2.0 miles, cross an old logging-camp clearing and bear right at its northeast corner; the trail crosses a brook four times over the next 1.2 miles — the last water on the trail — while climbing steadily. At 3.3 miles, the trail passes under the flank of Moose Mountain and ascends steeply, levels briefly at 3.8 miles in the sag between Moose Mountain and Doubletop, then climbs very steeply again, gaining more than 900 vertical feet in 0.8 mile over large boulders and exposed granite. Reach the open, ledgy South Peak (3,455') at 4.4 miles, then follow the level connecting ridge 0.2 mile to the wooded North Peak (3,489'), the true summit, at 4.5 miles. Retrace the same trail back to the trailhead for a round trip of roughly 9.3 miles. This side of the mountain is notably steep and can become treacherous when wet. For this reason, many hikers choose to continue on to Nesowadnehunk Field, where they can descend to meet a shuttle car they've dropped. Alternatively, you can retrace your route and descend the way you came.
