Path Type
Point to Point
This route runs point-to-point from Kidney Pond Campground to Nesowadnehunk Field Campground over both of Doubletop Mountain's summits, and requires a vehicle shuttle or hitch between the two trailheads.
From Kidney Pond trailhead area, follow the Doubletop Mountain Trail north, passing the Draper Pond Trail junction at 0.3 mile and crossing Slaughter Brook at 0.9 mile. At 1.1 miles, pass Deer Pond's south shore, then bear left onto an old tote road at 1.3 miles, where a spur leads right to parking on Kidney Pond Road. At 2.0 miles, cross an old logging-camp clearing, bearing right at its northeast corner; the trail crosses a brook four times over the next 1.2 miles — the last water before the summits — while climbing steadily.
At 3.3 miles, the trail passes under the flank of Moose Mountain and ascends steeply, levels briefly at 3.8 miles, then climbs very steeply again, gaining more than 900 vertical feet in 0.8 mile over boulders and exposed granite. Reach the open South Peak (3,455') at 4.3 miles, then follow the level ridge 0.2 mile to the wooded North Peak (3,489'), the true summit, at 4.5 miles.
Continue north, descending immediately past a short scramble and iron rungs, then easing onto a more gradual, drier grade around 5.9 miles. The trail continues down through forest, then flattens and crosses Nesowadnehunk Stream twice in the final mile — once by bridge, once by rock-hopping — before reaching Nesowadnehunk Field Campground at 7.4 miles.
