There and Back
This route starts and ends at the trailhead on Meadow Brook Road, off Lily Bay Road north of Greenville.
From the trailhead, the primitive footpath climbs gently for about a third of a mile, then switchbacks steadily uphill for just over a mile to the site of Number 4 Mountain's former fire warden's camp and the wooded summit at 1.7 miles, where the remains of an old fire tower still stand. Just past the summit, reach an overlook with views of Baker Mountain, Lily Bay Mountain, and Moosehead Lake.
From here, the trail descends and follows a gentle, rolling ridge south through softwood forest for about 2.6 miles to a rough road used as a snowmobile trail; cross it diagonally and pick the trail back up as it begins climbing again. Continue another 2.1 miles, with views opening toward Katahdin along the way, to Baker Mountain's 3,521-foot summit, reached at 6 miles from the trailhead. Retrace the ridge trail and Number 4 Mountain Trail back to the road for a round trip of about 12.8 miles.
