There and Back
The route begins and ends at the trailhead parking area off Spencer Mountain Road, after reaching the summit of Big Spencer Mountain.
From the trailhead, follow the blue-blazed path as it climbs moderately through a dense hardwood forest. At 1.0 mile, the trail reaches the historic warden's cabin.
Past the cabin, the grade steepens significantly. Climb approximately 1,847 vertical feet overall, navigating the rocky path via a series of wooden steps and metal ladders over steep rock ledges. At 1.6 miles, emerge onto the open, flat summit ridge. The trail ends at the summit, near a decommissioned fire tower and and other private communications equipment, offering views of Moosehead Lake and Mount Katahdin.
