French Creek

Located just outside Buffalo, this out-and-back route begins where the trail turns off the main highway. Continue up the maintained dirt road past a large parking and turnaround area that provides a good place to air down and prepare for the trip. The beginning of the route passes through private property. Follow all posted signs, remain on the designated road, and do not stop or leave the roadway while crossing this section. The dirt road is initially well maintained and suitable for most vehicles. After approximately 0.6 miles, the route passes through a second gate, leaves the private-property section, and returns to BLM land. This is where the trail becomes steeper and rockier. The first climb includes loose terrain and some larger rocks, requiring more thoughtful tire placement. The trail briefly mellows after the initial climb and continues through open meadows, aspen groves, and wide scenic views. Approximately half a mile later, the terrain requires route selection. Dispersed campsites begin roughly one mile from the start of the trail. Numerous camping options can be found throughout the remainder of the route, ranging from open sites with expansive views to more sheltered areas among the trees. Please use established sites and follow all current fire restrictions and local regulations. Drivers should expect rocky sections, multiple line choices, and one larger, deeply rutted obstacle. The trail generally accommodates full-size vehicles, although a few sections become tighter farther along the route. High clearance is strongly recommended. Four-wheel drive is also recommended, particularly for climbing back out, as the return becomes very steep approximately 1.5 miles from the start. The route ends near a hiking trail, an old cabin, and a posted sign prohibiting motorized vehicles beyond that point. Do not continue past the closure. There is enough room near the end to turn around before retracing the route back to the highway.
