Trail Overview
This road starts at US-16 from Road 403, about 15 minutes west of Buffalo. It begins at a swing-arm barricade next to the 366 marker and the posted mud warning sign, then follows a mellow two-track across open grassland. Expect cattle grazing right alongside the road, so take it slow and give them room. The track rolls through a cattle guard and a series of open meadows broken up by scattered rock outcrops, ponderosa stands, and an aspen grove. The surface is packed dirt with a bit of loose rock and mild ruts, nothing that requires low range. After a gradual climb, the road crests a bald ridge and ends at a quiet dispersed campsite at the edge of the timber. The road clearly stops here as the forest closes in, so plan to turn around. It is a great spot for lunch or an overnight.
Difficulty
There is no single obstacle worth calling out. There are mild ruts, some loose rock on the climb, and steep sections. It is passable in any high-clearance vehicle in dry conditions. The main hazards are cattle on and beside the road and the mud warning. The clay surface will get slick and rut badly when wet, so avoid it after rain. Winter weather will make the route considerably more difficult, and vehicle requirements can change with snow, ice, mud, or recent storms.
