Trail Overview

This is a maintained gravel Forest Service route that travels from the Cheat Bridge area to US 250. This section was once a large strip. It passes along the Cheat River and then up in elevation with scenic views. The road is mostly maintained gravel with some mud and rocky areas. Several sediment ponds are left over from the mining era, with many dispersed camping areas located along the route. There is no cell service in this area.

we started the trail of cheat bridge road. you'll cross an old bridge then have a few water holes 12"+ deep and a short rocky, washed out climb to join the rest of fsr 233. to avoid the water and rocky section come in white top road. fsr 233 follows the river and is graded gravel with potholes scattered throughout. there are plenty of dispersed campsites right on the river. continue onto fsr 227 at the fork and start heading up the mountain. there are many dispersed campspots near mower basin trailhead and scattered along fsr 227. towards the end of the route make sure to go up to the Barton knob lookout for the best view of the surrounding area. fsr 227 ends at highway 250
