Trail Overview

This easy gravel road takes you through the Puget Sound Energy Wild Horse Wind Farm. A typical passenger car can handle this section with ease. Starting at the closed gate (season dependent), on the keypad, enter the pin code found on the gate itself to access the wind farm. Note, a free access permit is required and can be found here https://www.pse.com/pages/tours-and-recreation/wild-horse/wild-horse-access-request. The gravel road is nicely graded, and as you wind between the behemoth wind turbines, you'll have beautiful views of the valleys below. On a clear day, you can see Mt. Rainer and Mt. Adams in the distance to the southwest. About 4.5 miles up, you'll come to a cattle gate. Simply open the gate and close it behind you. You'll now be in the Quilomene Wildlife Area. Past the gate, trails can be very rutted, rocky, muddy, or covered in snow, season dependent. High clearance 4X4 may be needed in some areas. On top of the ridge at the end of this track, there is a very flat and wide-open area where you'll have amazing views of the entire area and a great place for lunch. This area can be used as a launchpad for many other off-road trails, camping, hiking, and wildlife viewing.Travel in this area is restricted to Green Dot Roads only. Additional Green Dot maps that show restricted areas for wintering elk can be found here https://wdfw.wa.gov/sites/default/files/2021-05/11x17_greendot_whiskey_dick___quilomene.pdf

Easy, but the washboards aren’t fun to drive over. Nice views and a good time

The wind turbine road runs 5 miles after that you get to a gate which is unlocked just open that and make sure you close it behind you! Trail is rocky for the most part! About 7 miles in you will come across a section that has 4 routes to chose from all of them are puddles/ mud of different depts I picked the second one from the left and that’s the one the pick is from! We made it 10 miles before we hit snow! We say hella eagles, elk and a small heard of deer! We will definitely go back to explore more because there are so many offshoots from the main road!

Cattle grazing gates were open at both ends, and a closed gate in the middle could easily be opened and passed. Trail was easy even with a few small puddles and one large puddle - they could be avoided entirely or crossed easily. Beautiful conditions!
