Trail Overview
Operating as a highly rewarding out-and-back spur, W-2600 offers a beautiful, multifaceted journey through the vibrant Pacific Northwest wilderness. The route travels through a dynamic National Forest environment, seamlessly transitioning between dense, shaded evergreen timber and expansive, newly planted clear-cut meadows. Outdoor enthusiasts, campers, and sightseers frequently utilize this brief detour to harvest summer blackberries, admire blooming wildflowers, and access several fantastic dispersed campsites tucked into the surrounding woods. The driving surface consists of a well-established, solid gravel and dirt double-track that earns a moderate Grade 2 difficulty rating. As the trail breaks out of the tree canopy and into the open clear-cut sections, travelers are treated to sweeping, unobstructed views of the lush valley below and the majestic, towering peak of Mount Rainier in the distance. The pathway features multiple inviting offshoots before ultimately concluding at a natural dirt berm, which serves as a popular, secluded spot for backcountry camping and recreational target shooting. Visitors can easily utilize this spacious dead-end clearing to turn around and head back out to the main thoroughfare.
Difficulty
Earning a moderate Grade 2 difficulty rating, this short out-and-back mountain spur features a generally firm, reliable gravel and dirt foundation that lacks any extreme technical off-road challenges. Deep, impassable mud bogs, intimidating rock crawls, and treacherous shelf drop-offs are completely absent from the scenic drive. However, travelers must remain vigilant as the road surface is plagued by several unexpectedly deep, jarring potholes. Navigating these sunken depressions requires an attentive driving approach and deliberately reduced speeds, as striking them too fast could easily damage a wheel or disrupt vehicle alignment. Maintaining a cautious, steady crawling pace is essential to comfortably manage the uneven surface conditions, allowing standard vehicles with adequate ground clearance to safely and confidently reach the stunning meadow viewpoints and secluded campsites at the end of the route.
