Trail Overview
Located within the exceptionally lush, densely wooded environment of the Gifford Pinchot National Forest, W-1100 serves as a brief but highly rewarding out-and-back forest spur. Accessed directly off the main pavement near the W - 1000 logging route, this 0.7-mile track leads travelers away from the open, sun-drenched clear-cut zones and plunges deep into a vibrant, shaded evergreen canopy. Outdoor enthusiasts and overland campers utilize this quiet woodland detour to escape the busier main forestry arteries, enjoy the peaceful greenery, and secure a secluded spot for the night. The driving surface consists of a narrow, single-track dirt and crushed rock path adorned with a grassy center median, earning an accessible Grade 2 difficulty rating. Cruising at a relaxed average speed of roughly 7.0 mph, drivers will experience an immersive journey surrounded by towering firs and thick ferns lining the immediate shoulders. The route ultimately concludes at a beautiful, spacious forest clearing that provides a fantastic, private dispersed camping location before requiring a safe turnaround to exit back to the main travel corridor.
Difficulty
Earning an accessible Grade 2 difficulty rating, this short 0.7-mile out-and-back spur features a relatively firm dirt and gravel foundation that is heavily blanketed by low-growing grasses and encroaching trailside vegetation. Technical off-road obstacles such as deep mud bogs, steep cliffside drop-offs, and high-clearance boulder fields are completely absent beneath the thick forest canopy. As captured in the trail photos, non-technical considerations are strictly limited to navigating the narrow single-lane corridor, maintaining traction on the grassy center track, and watching for small, hidden rocks or debris obscured by the green undergrowth. Drivers should keep a slow, relaxed pace to avoid scratching vehicle paint on the overhanging brush and carefully utilize the spacious camping clearing at the end of the road to execute a safe multi-point turnaround before heading back to the pavement.
