Trail Overview

Nestled within a vibrant, overgrown woodland of tall cedar and fir trees in the Gifford Pinchot National Forest, the W-1200 route provides a short but highly scenic out-and-back forest detour. Branching directly off the primary regional forestry network, this 1.0-mile single-track spur invites outdoor enthusiasts and overland travelers to explore its lush canopy, forage for wild summer blackberries, and access several secluded dispersed campsites hidden among beautiful seasonal wildflowers. The driving surface consists of a narrow, vegetation-heavy dirt and crushed rock path earning an accessible Grade 2 difficulty rating. Traversing this quiet corridor requires a slow, measured pace as thick tall grasses, blooming foliage, and encroaching shrubbery aggressively crowd the wheel tracks and obscure the path ahead. The track remains mostly flat as it pushes deeper into the timberland, passing multiple private camping clearings before abruptly terminating. At the 1.0-mile mark, the route concludes at a loose gravel dead-end flanked by deep drainage ditches, forcing drivers to execute a careful, multi-point turnaround to exit back the way they came.

Difficulty

Earning a mild Grade 2 difficulty rating, this 1.0-mile out-and-back spur features a relatively firm dirt and gravel foundation that is heavily obscured by encroaching nature. Technical off-road hazards such as deep mud bogs, steep shelf drop-offs, and high-clearance boulder fields are completely absent under normal dry summer conditions. However, the track presents notable non-technical challenges, primarily involving intense trailside brush and tall center-median grasses that will brush against vehicle sides and limit forward visibility. Drivers must maintain a very slow, deliberate speed to safely navigate the blind overgrowth and carefully manage the restrictive turnaround at the dead-end, which is significantly complicated by loose surface gravel and deep side ditches that demand precise tire placement.
